How long will a power station run a refrigerator?

A 1,000 Wh station gives an estimated 17 hours for this page’s example full-size fridge: 150 W running, 30% duty cycle and 1,200 W starting load. That uses the calculator’s 90% depth-of-discharge and 85% inverter-efficiency assumptions, not a runtime test.

Check your fridge’s own running and starting watts.

Using our runtime calculator’s formula, the 17 power stations we list that have an AC outlet would run an example full-size fridge (150 W, compressor on 30% of the time) for about 4 to 29 hours, and an example compact fridge (80 W, on 35% of the time) for about 7 to 42 hours. These are arithmetic estimates from each maker’s listed watt-hours, not tests, and several smaller stations list a surge rating below the example full-size fridge’s starting watts. Your own fridge’s watts and how often its compressor runs decide the real answer.

How the estimate works

We use the same arithmetic as the runtime calculator, with its default planning assumptions:

  • Usable watt-hours = capacity × (90% depth of discharge) × (85% inverter efficiency).
  • Average load = running watts × duty cycle + idle draw.
  • Runtime = usable watt-hours ÷ average load.

For example, a 1,000 Wh station with the example full-size fridge and no listed idle draw: 1,000 × 0.90 × 0.85 = 765 usable Wh; 150 W × 0.30 = 45 W average; 765 ÷ 45 = 17 hours. Depth of discharge and inverter efficiency are planning assumptions, not figures from the makers. Where a maker lists a standby (idle) draw, we add it, as the calculator does. Where it isn’t listed, 0 W is used, which makes the estimate longer than real life.

What did we assume for the two example fridges?

The example compact fridge uses 80 W while the compressor runs, 400 W to start, and runs 35% of the time. The example full-size fridge uses 150 W running, 1,200 W to start, and runs 30% of the time. These are example assumptions, the same ones as the fridge presets in our calculator, not measurements of any real refrigerator. Replace them with the figures on your own fridge’s label.

Reading the start column: a fridge compressor draws more power for a moment when it starts. If the example 1,200 W start is above a station’s listed surge rating, the station may not start that fridge at all, however many hours the table shows. For the example compact fridge (400 W start), every station with an AC outlet lists a continuous or surge rating of at least 400 W. The Anker SOLIX C300 DC lists no AC outlet, so it isn’t meant for a plug-in fridge.

Will a power station keep food safe if it runs out?

Not after the power to the fridge stops. The FDA says a refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened, and that refrigerated perishable food above 40 °F for 4 hours or more should be discarded. A runtime estimate doesn’t replace a fridge thermometer.

Estimate your own

Open the runtime calculator, pick a station, choose a fridge preset, then replace the example watts with the figures on your fridge’s label. You can also see how many watt-hours you need in What size power station do I need for a power outage?
